FLIGHT DATA RECORDERS
FAI/IGC APPROVED GPS DATA-LOGGERS
NEWS!!!
On 2nd and 3rd of March there was and IGC Plenary Meeting in South Africa where they have discussed several issues regarding glider sport. There was one that was very important for flyWithCE Flight Recorder and it was related GPS altitude. According to new rule GPS altitude will be accepted (and there is no need to carry the separate altitude recorder), where pilot will have to make extra reserve which would compensate possible GPS error. Here is actual text:

8.1.7

Allow for use of GPS height for Silver and Gold badge claims

GPS altitude evidence alone is sufficient for a flight provided that a 100 metre error margin is applied to all pressure height requirements of the Code (example: the gain of height is at least 1100 metres for Silver altitude). See Annex C, para 2.3 for other examples.

If the required height is not met following the application of this margin, evidence must be provided by a pressure altitude record used in the normal way, conforming to IGC rules and procedures for barographs. For distance flights, the profile of GPS-derived altitudes from a position recorder must correspond to the profile of the pressure altitude record.

Year 2

Adopted

This means that where flyWithCE Flight Recorder is certified by the NAC (Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, USA), pilots can use recordings also for Silver and Gold FAI badge. This greatly extends the use of the flyWithCE Flight Recorder. The new rule will be applied when updated Sporting Code takes effect. According to my information this will be with October 1st.

The International Gliding Commission (IGC) introduced new class of recorders - position recorders. Pilots can use flights recorded with those devices together with altitude recorder (barogram for instance) to claim silver and gold badges. Each position recorder has to be approved by national committee. Check official FAI Position Recorder web page.
.In  2012 it is expected that the rules for position recorders will be changed and GPS altitude will be accepted for silver and gold badges. This will eliminate requirement to carry barogram. More will be known when new specifications will be revealed.

Quickly select file for OLC
upload With on-line championships you have to upload proper file. With several files stored in same folder it is hard to pick the right IGC file. With new "copy path" option this is much easier. This feature was included after one support call where I helped one user with the correct procedure how to upload the file. Because of the problems locating file he used another IGC viewer to select the file, which he than uploaded to OLC. During the procedure 3rd party IGC viewer changed IGC file and because it was not recognized as intact. After upload to OLC the verification program would recognize this flight as changed and because of that it was refused and it was not scored on OLC. At that time it was evident that there is a need for simpler file selection which was then introduced with this version of the flyWithCE Logbook program.
Copy path option
The procedure is quite simple:

  1. Select flight in flyWithCE Logbook which you would like to upload.
  2. Use right mouse click to display menu.
  3. Select "Copy file path" option in menu.
  4. Open OLC web page and login using your username and password.
  5. Select "Claim Flight" option. Press "Browse" button. Press right mouse button and select "Paste" option. Press "Open" button and then "Upload" button.

Remember - flights that are uploaded to OLC must be signed.
Copy path option - movie
Here is short demonstration movie how you can use copy paste path option.

To keep the cost low consumer GPS logging device was used. In cooperation with device manufacturer the devices firmware was updated so that it would fit best glider pilot requirements. On the other hand consumer device has some limitations. Device is not IGC certified as flight recorder and does not have engine sensor or pressure altitude sensor. Because of that flights recorded with this device could not be used for claiming national/world records or diamond badge.

Colibri II

reviews:
Just wanted to give you some feedback after flying the Colibri II for the first time today in our club’s 1-26.  Mounting was easy, I simply velcro’ed it to a bare spot in the instrument panel.  The display is bright, the GPS is quick to establish a fix, and the audio vario works very well.  In weak conditions today in Virginia I managed the longest flight of the day (2.5 hrs) and credit the vario function of the Colibri II in helping me from a couple of low saves.

Completely new design approach
Flight recorder with Basic navigation and Variometer with audio as a standard solution
Colibri II is a result of continuous development of the last 15 years. The unit is much smaller but has got many new features. The original Colibri was born in 1999 and more than 2500 Colibris were produced from the beginning until today.Colibri II uses the latest pressure sensor technology, a colour display and a high end micro controller. These components allow integration of many features in an extremely small box.
The Internal battery
(accumulator) is able to drive the unit up to 6 hours with full back light of the display. When using the screen saver function the endurance can be extended up to 10 hours. The unit can be also powered from the aircraft power bus and which means that the internal battery is always full and ready to power the unit even after a loss of main power. The internal battery can be recharged very simple and without using special chargers. Connection to the USB port of the PC will recharge the battery. Battery replacement is simple and doesn't require authorized personal.
GPS receiver and its antenna is an integrated part of the unit, that means no external antenna required, vertical and also horizontal orientation provide sufficient GPS reception.
The unit has one control in form of a so-called navigation switch, which in fact combines five switches built into one housing, so the following commands are available:
-left and right
-up/down
-press as confirmation
The philosophy of operation remains LX philosophy, so no problems for the pilots who already used LX Navigation products.
 Completely new design approach

Colibri II Accessories (Options)

A suitable mounting frame is available as an option, insertion and removal of Colibri II is absolutely easy, because of  snap  in system configuration. The device is made from aluminum and consists of one spring and a preformed aluminum plate. Both mentioned parts are  black painted. Installation is achieved by means of two screws. The mounting frame does not consists any connectors. when purchased with Colibri II $20.00

To ensure continuous power supply
from the glider network, a special interface can be inserted between glider 12V source and Colibri II. After connected to glider power the Colibri battery will remain full and will offer its full capacity even after glider network failure. when purchased with Colibri II $27.00

NANO
The smallest flight recorder with integrated GPS, antenna, LiIon battery and bluetooth technology.
IGC approved!

User comments:
Just wanted to let you know, the LX Nano flight recorder worked perfectly, first time out of the box, I couldn't be happier.  If the battery holds up and there are no unexpected problems, this will be the best $600 I ever spent on glider stuff.  Could be just what it takes to put badge flying back within the reach of the common glider pilot.  Also a great tool for instructors that need to bounce back and forth between aircraft, just keep in your shirt pocket and for debrief merely plug it into a laptop.
