The large variety of wheel types used in sailplane production over the years can sometimes make reordering difficult. Some sailplanes actually may have had different wheel types used throughout the series production and in some cases the original assemblies are no longer produced.
Below the most coming wheel types are pictured with brief descriptions to help identify the type you have when parts or replacement is necessary. wpe32433.gif (68735 bytes)Sailplane wheel brakes are designed for normal landing conditions and often times a sailplane producer has chosen a too-small brake due to other design criteria (small space) or reduced production costs. Consider the loads acting on the relatively small wheel of a sailplane and compare these to the forces applied on a compact car with FOUR WHEEL BRAKES.
Especially on modern gliders with their higher all-up weights the disk brake has become standard on many designs. TOST therefore offers retrofit kits for the following sailplanes:Bocian - Puchaz, Twin-Astir, Astir CS, Jeans Astir, Schiebe SF-34, Janus, ASK-13, Kiwi, Glasflugel Mosquito, Hornet, 304, HpH 304C, 304CZ,  SZD-55, Jantar-Swift. DG100-400, DG600, PW-6 Schempp-Hirth Ventus - Discus and LS4 .
Two major types of landing wheels are common in sailplane use today:
The mechanical shoe brake and the hydraulic disk brake (Pictured here)
The advantage of shoe brakes are simple construction, reduced space requirements, lower force on the brake cable because of the servo action, and of course the lower cost. These benefits are offset by fading effect and long cables, which may dissipate a large portion of the manual forces either by stretching cables or by incorrect installation or adjustment settings.
The Disk brake on the other hand needs more space and higher operating forces, but because of its superior heat dissipation is capable of taking a higher load. It shows scarcely any fading effect and in addition has greater braking power.Sailplane brakes are often criticized and seldom understood.

BELOW 5" STANDARD TOST  wheel is a larger and more robust wheel used on many sailplanes like the Glasflugel Hornet, Mosquito, 304, Grob singles, ASW19 and 20's and many heavier 2 place sailplanes. Note the heavier springs used on most of the Standard brake shoes (one large and one smaller return spring) than those used for Kobold type wheel.

Tremendous stopping power is available from the addition of a Hydraulic Disk Brake now offered by most manufacturers of new sailplanes. We can now also offer retrofit kits for some older designs to replace
older and less effective mechanical show brake systems.
Typically, sailplanes that now have the larger 5" Standard brake and some Kobold installations
will be candidates for these retrofits.
Installations may require some work suitable only by qualified mechanics and in some cases may require
 some simple machine work. parts are supplied by TOST and may include modified parts from "Cleveland Brake"
and others from parts list supplied by the respective glider manufacturers and may require some custom
modifications not specifically outlined in the installation instructions.
