The large variety of wheel types used in sailplane production over the years can sometimes make reordering difficult. Some sailplanes actually may have had different wheel types used throughout the series production and in some cases the original assemblies are no longer produced.
Below the most coming wheel types are pictured with brief descriptions to help identify the type you have when parts or replacement is necessary. The problem with most glider wheel brakes isn't the wheel or the brake but the cables, cable housing and brake levers not transmitting the pull necessary at the wheel. With the hydraulic assist this loss of pulling power is eliminated. Especially on gliders like the Cirrus where the small 4" brake was used  braking force a Tost drum brake wheel type Kobold is installed, which can be actuated hydraulically. The braking is thus considerably improved and can be better dosed. Loss of brake force due to the friction of the existing mechanical cable actuation is eliminated.

To retrofit the hydraulic actuation in the Cirrus it is necessary to replace the existing wheel against the Kobold wheel included in the retrofit kit. In the Cirrus kit is included a new axle and fixing parts. If the glider is already fitted with a Kobold or Standard shoe brake wheel then only the anchor plate needs to be replaced to mount the Hydraulic assist to the wheel assembly, you have only the change of the actuating, no change of wheel.

Two major types of landing wheels are common in sailplane use today:The mechanical shoe brake and the hydraulic disk brake (Pictured here)
The advantage of shoe brakes are simple construction, reduced space requirements and of course the lower cost. These benefits are offset by fading effect and long cables, which may dissipate a large portion of the manual forces either by stretching cables or by incorrect installation or adjustment settings.
The Disk brake on the other hand needs more space and higher operating forces, but because of its superior heat dissipation is capable of taking a higher load it shows scarcely any fading effect and in addition has greater braking power.
Many sailplane producers have chosen a too-small brake due to their design criteria (small space) or reduced production costs rather than selecting a wheel/brake option that fully meets the demand that will be required by the owner and end user. Consider the loads acting on the relatively small wheel of a sailplane and compare these to the forces applied on a compact car with FOUR WHEEL BRAKES.
Especially on modern gliders with their higher weights the disk brake has become standard on many designs. TOST offers retrofit kits for the following sailplanes: Bocian - Puchaz, Twin-Astir, Astir CS, Jeans Astir, Schiebe SF-34, Janus, ASK-13, Kiwi, Glasflugel Mosquito, Hornet, 304, HpH 304C, 304CZ,  SZD-55, Jantar-Swift. DG100-400, DG600, PW-6 Schempp-Hirth Ventus - Discus and LS4 .

Optional DISK Brake wheels are available from Wings & Wheels produced by TOST for some sailplanes in a parts kit form. These same parts are also used by many of the manufacturers of new sailplanes. Installations may require some work suitable only by qualified mechanics and in some cases may require some simple machine work. parts are supplied by TOST and may include modified parts from "Cleveland Brake" and others from parts list supplied by the respective glider manufacturers and may require some custom
modifications not specifically outlined in the installation instructions.Typically, sailplanes that now have the larger 5" Standard brake and some Kobold installations will be candidates for these retrofits.
