Now the good news!
The FAA is amending the regulations governing the packing interval for certain types of parachutes. Currently, the FAA prohibits most parachutes from being used or carried
aboard an aircraft and available for emergency use unless they have been packed within
the previous 120 days. New reliability data from the parachute industry and other
sources indicate that the packing interval should be increased; therefore,
we are lengthening the interval from 120 to 180 days.
This final rule revises the parachute packing interval and ensures safe use.
The official release was November 19, 2008 as far as the register is concerned.
It will be official 30 days from that date which puts it at December 19th, 2008.

"National Flat-Pack"
In co-operation with design input from Wings & Wheels National has added yet another great new design. With a slightly wider and more rectangular shape rather than the "teardrop" already copied by most other manufacturers and sold as a "wedge" parachute the new National FLAT is thinner and even more supple than before. The Flat-Pack parachute can also be custom packed* to allow more canopy to be in the top of the container for the absolute thinnest beltline thickness or spread evenly to be one thickness (thinness!) top to bottom .

Compared to our original Back Parachutes, the new "National Flat" is slightly wider and higher...but much flatter.
Plus, you have two choices for final shape / thickness based on the rigger's packing method.

"A" Harness Option for National Back,
Seat and Chair Parachutes.
Purpose: To position leg strap hardware away from lap belt.
"A" (Alternative*) Harness "Standard" Harness

The snap and V-ring are moved 5" rearwards to position the hardware behind lap belt. The snap and V-ring are under the lap belt and may cause discomfort during intense aerobatics. * Serves the same purpose as the "Aerobatic" harness by relocating the hardware.
NOTE: We do not recommend the "A" Harness for glider use

"Time / Life" or service life
The formal determination of "Time / Life" or service life of a non-military personnel parachute is still open ended and
non specific. Someone must take the initiative and make a judgment call to ground it. By comparison: "Personnel (military) parachutes have a determined service life (a maximum shelf life) without use of 16.5 years, and every personnel parachute is stamped with a manufacturing date that starts its life-cycle clock.
A personnel parachute is also stamped with the date that it is first placed in service (PIS). From that point on, a parachute�s service life cannot exceed 12 years. The longer the unit sits on the shelf the less service life it has once placed in service."
The Parachute Industry Association (PIA) has visited this issue without conclusion to date. Until the PIA specifies
or recommends otherwise, it is the opinion of the current management at National Parachute that the maximum
service life is 20 years from date of manufacture.
