Construction of a "Pilot
Relief" System
An important and possibly even a necessary accessory to every
sailplane should be an efficient Pilot Relief System. The effects of dehydration have been
well documented, and the only way to avoid dehydration is to continually replace body
fluids with large intakes of liquid, preferably water. The problem with this large intake
of fluids is that what goes in, must certainly go out! Some pilots have use the infamous
"P" Bomb which is simply a baggy with a diaper or another absorbent material
inside to hopefully make spillage less of a problem. From a sailplanes somewhat reclined
seating position the"P" bomb is however often very difficult to use and
sometimes even requires you to loosen or even remove straps from seatbelts or even
parachute harnesses, and with all the necessary maneuvering to use this method ,
inevitably he will have less awareness of whats happening outside the cockpit and
more times than not may find the "P" bomb was no longer necessary anyway for now
he is on the ground! Seeing the dilemma, some sailplane manufacturers have even made
relief systems standard or optional equipment, but if however your ship does not include
one, W&W has the simple parts available to construct your own system. Typically, a
rubber hose or tube is routed from the cockpit, through the cockpit floor which eventually
exits through the belly or preferably through the landing gear well and is attached to the
landing gear door. This requires the extension of the landing gear prior to use but
normally insures that the waste fluids dump cleanly away from the sailplane. Obvious care
as always should be taken when installing such a system that no controls or apparatus can
be fouled buy the system hoses or hardware. |
