WESTERBOER VARIOMETERS
Dr. Westerboer GmbH, Prößlstr. 18, D-92637 Weiden Germany

For several years Wings & Wheels was the US distributor of the fine line of Westerboer variometers and competition flight computers. For a short time other companies produced flight computers with GPS systems that were more widely accepted and better supported by contest managers and that diminished the pilot/owners for these very high end (and at the time) more expensive instruments. Eventually other lower cost variometers took over much of the simple variometer market and ultimately we discontinued with the Westerboer line.
Times have changed though and with the new line of Westerboer variometers recently released we have brought these back again! Westerboer in not a new company and many of their original
VW5KB and even earlier variometers are still in use and loved today dating back to the Era of the 1960's. Westerboer offers TE Probe compensated variometers and also one of the very best Electronic TE variometers that can be operated without a TE probe using simply Pitot/Static inputs.

With decreased panel spaces available today with large screen graphic navigation displays, transponders and additional instrumentation these fine 57mm instruments with optional data will obviously become the first choice again for discrimination competition and recreational pilots as well

With the VW1020 additional a graphic display is installed where further information can be shown.
The variometer signal is based on the often praised "Electronic TE" VW910. By means of digital signal processing along with approved sensor technology, the characteristics of the variometer could be further improved without the need t be connected to a TE probe.

NEW VW1150
VW1150 brouchure
Manual

Westerborer developed a new VW1150, which is an interface between VW10x0 with CAN-Bus and up to three COM ports for PDA, logger or Flarm. The COM ports can be programmed (baud rate, filter for NMEA strings). The VW1150 has an internal switching power supply (5V/2.5A) for up to 2 PDAs.

With the VW1150 the data between a rate of climb indicator of the VW1000-Serie and GPS receivers (Logger, Flarm) interface with the module and PDA in a simple manner. At the CAN interface the VW10x0-Variometer is attached and data, which the rate of climb indicator can supply, are sent dependent on the respective rate of climb indicator variant. The PDA also transfers between the Variometer and can be served in the opposite direction. For example the MacCready value of the VW1020 can to be adjusted or the volume of the Audios be changed. The three COM interfaces can be operated with Baud rates between 1200 and 115200. To each COM interface also a voltage can be transferred in 12V or 5V, in order to supply a terminal to (Logger, Flarm, PDA). The internal switch power pack supplies up to 2.5 A with 5 V.
